ELLISVILLE – It’s a long way from Buford, Ga., to Jones County Junior College, but Ryan Robinson has made the best of it.

“It’s been tough not being able to go home very much,” the 6-foot-5, 255-pound sophomore defensive end said. “It’s been a humbling experience. But I’m focusing on what I have to do to get to the next level. I’ve been staying low-key and I’ve tried to do what I have to do.”

Robinson has been a stalwart for the past year and a half for head coach Eddie Pierce’s Bobcats.

He was a second-team, All-MACJC South Division performer as a freshman in 2009. This year, he has been solid since the start of the season.

Through five games, Robinson has 21 solo tackles, nine assists, seven tackles for a loss and four quarterback sacks.

It’s easy to see why Oklahoma State University signed Robinson out of Mill Creek High School. “It’s fun playing on the edge,” he said. “You get to rush the quarterback, make sacks, make tackles, bat down balls and maybe get an interception. I did not play defensive end until my sophomore year in high school, but I really like it.”

Robinson did not qualify out of high school to attend OSU and elected to go the junior college route. He said Pierce was a major influence on him deciding to become a Bobcat.

“Coach Pierce, it seems, came to see me twice a week,” he said. “He even said he drove over five hours one time to stay for five minutes and drove right back. I was not expecting to come down here to Mississippi, but I’m glad I did.”

The Bobcats went 6-4 and made the playoffs last year. This year, they are currently 2-3 overall and 0-2 in division play.

Robinson said the team is trying to remain upbeat heading into the second half of the season.

“Practice-wise, we are just trying to have fun,” he said. “We are taking pride in what we have left over the next few weeks and we are trying to enjoy it. We are going to have fun with it because it will go by fast.

“I think the team’s attitude is still good. We are down, but we are not out. We still have a chance if we win out. There is a possibility we can get back in it, so we just have to stay focused, play hard and play with pride.”

The Bobcats defeated Holmes Community College 24-6 last week to end a three-game losing skid. Robinson said it was important for the team to rebound and get back into the win column.

“We played pretty good,” he said. “But it’s like Coach Pierce has been saying, we need to learn to put teams away. When we are up big, we need to keep going. But we played good, played as a team and got a victory.

“Coach Pierce has been preaching to do the best you can and let’s go 5-0 over the last five games.”

Robinson, who said he has enjoyed his two years at JCJC, has tried to become more of a leader during his sophomore season.

“It’s been fun,” he said. “There has been a lot of pressure put on me to step up and be a vocal leader because I don’t speak too much.”

Robinson expects to head to Stillwater and enroll at Oklahoma State when he graduates from JCJC in December. He said he knows it will be tough playing in the Big 12, but he looks forward to the opportunity.

“If everything goes well and I graduate in December, I plan on going to Oklahoma State,” he said. “I will continue to work and pursue my goals. It’s going to be tough being away from home again. It’s even further away from home than here, about 12 hours.

“But I have to stay focused on what I have to do and on my goals I want to achieve. My big goal is to play in the NFL one day and I have got to do what I need to do to make it happen.”

Jeremiah Price, a former Bobcat defensive end, played at Oklahoma State in 2008-09. Price, a Collins native, was at JCJC in 2006-07 and has talked with Robinson a bit about the Cowboys’ program.

“He has told me about the playbook and what to expect,” Robinson said. “He told me what I will be doing as soon as I get up there, as far as weights and things like that.”
