Sure-tackling Hinds DB ready to make his mark

Hinds generally produces a lot of talent that make an impact at four-year schools and this season S J'Vontez Blackmon (6-0, 187) promises to be one of those players. JCFootball.com spoke to the sure-tackling defensive back and he updated us on why he chose Hinds and what he does best on the football field....

Blackmon prepped at Forest Hill High School in Jackson, Mississippi and was a full-qualifier notching a 3.0 GPA and a 21 on his ACT. However, he didn't get much in the way of recruiting attention, so he decided to head to the best school and football program he could find.

"Hinds always has great players and they play against the top competition out there," Blackmon noted. "I talked to the coaches for a while and just knew it was the right situation for me and so far it's been really great."

As a freshman last fall, Blackmon started every game for the Eagles at strong safety and totaled 70 tackles and 20 passes defensed. While those are solid numbers, he said he wants to be even more impactful in 2011.

"I didn't have any picks, so that's something I want to work on," Blackmon said. "I need to make more of those so that we can get the ball back in our offense's hands and that way we can take the will of the other team.

"I'm just working on everything this fall. I'm working on my strength, my conditioning, my speed, everything.

"I'm a sure-tackler, that's what I do best. I read plays well and I get there quickly and make the tackle, but I can always get better and do all the little things right."

Recruiting hasn't been very heavy yet for the talented DB, but he said recently Auburn made an inquiry into his availability.

"They called and talked to my coaches about me," Blackmon said. "I'm open to anyone that wants to recruit me and I'll go anywhere to play.

"I just want to find a good school, with good academics and also a place where I can challenge for playing time when I arrive. If a school has all that, then I'll give them a serious look."

Blackmon is set to be a mid-year signee and he will have have three years to play two following the 2011 football season.
