2011 Team Preview: Fullerton (Defense)

Fullerton DT Ioane Gauta

In part-two of our Fullerton College preview we speak with quarterbacks coach Thomas Maher about the top prospects on the defensive side of the ball and what each one brings to the table...

DT Ioane Gauta - He is getting really good. Has many big schools recruiting him. Athlete who gets after it. Big and strong and holds up well against the run.

DT Hakeem Akinola - Growing up and has several minor injuries. Poised for a big 2011 season inside for the Hornets.

DT Chima Ike - A great player who's size (5'10, 250) will keep him from going to a big-time school. Will be a solid get for a lower-level college (D-2, D-3, NAIA) football program.

DT Nick Finney - Redshirted at San Jose State in 2009 and was a backup for Fullerton in 2010. A solid player in all facets of the game.

DT Jonathan Butler - Finally healthy and ready to be a player for Fullerton. His inexperience is the only question mark.

DE Isiah Jones - Has a chance to really upgrade his stock this year. Was a key backup in 2010.

DE Steven Garcia - Very good player and a very good student. Quality person and a hard-worker.

DE Justin Bernthaler - Was a surprise for Fullerton as a transplant from Germany last year. Had a solid season and should be better this year.

DE Marcus Griffin - Griffin redshirted in 2010. Very fast off the edge.

LB Brandon Guerrero - Signed with Troy out of high school. Played defensive end for the Hornets in 2010 and posted 4 sacks, but moves back to his more natural postion of middle linebacker this fall.

LB Will Starks - Had to redshirt in 2009 and then missed 2010 while he was tending to school. Is a talented player and will be a heavy contributor this fall.

LB Chaz Rogers - Rogers is a solid player, but with Fullerton so loaded with talent at the position, he likely will have to pick his spots to contribute.

LB Gary Wright - Wright is a super-talented prospect who will need to go D-2 because of his clock. He is a major talent and will be a big-time kid at the next level.

LB Mark Wilson - Will be an inside linebacker at Fullerton this fall. Has bounced around a bit, but will have three to play three following the season and should be D-1 eligible by the summer of 2012. Stud who is a thumper inside with his 6'2, 250-pound frame.

CB Derrick Price - Started for Fullerton in 2009, then tore his ACL partway through the 2010 season. Missing fall camp this year, but is expected to be back and will play this fall. Solid cover-corner who has the speed and athleticism to be a D-1 prospect if he's fully healthy.

CB Darien Irby - Should be one of the best cover-corners on the team and can play safety because he is so physical. Started in 2010.

CB Tremaine Shepperd - Has worked hard and it should pay off with a great 2011 season. The Fullerton coaches really like this kid a lot and think he has a bright future at the next level.

CB CB Herb King - Has had a great offseason and is poised for a big season. Fullerton coaches are expecting big things from King this fall.

CB Louis Covington - A scrappy player. Very tough and a nasty cover-guy. Plays with a chip on his shoulder. Has matured quite a bit in his time at Fullerton.

CB Ray Scott - Another solid coverage corner. Scott will probably need to go to a lower-division school due to clock, but he can be a star at that level.

S Tra Sumler - Starter in 2009 opener until he brok his leg and then tore an ACL in 2010 fall camp. Getting close to being cleared to play ball this season. Physical kid. Could play three years at a D-2 school or have two to play two at a D-1 program.

S Adrian Lopez - Will lay you out. He's a "beast hitter" and started seven games in 2010 before he hurt his shoulder and was lost for a couple games. When he went out the secondary struggled. He will be a big-time player this fall.

S Adrian Gallegos - Solid player. Needs to find a place this fall and the Fullerton coaches hope to get him some more work, but there are players in front of him right now.
