NDSCS DT ready for a big 2012 season

One defensive line prospect who has been putting quite a bit of time into his offseason training this year has been NDSCS DT Derek Butcher (6-4, 278) and he told JCFootball.com recently that he hopes that hard work pays off with an offer from a four-year school...

"I've really increased my strength a lot this year and I've been in the weight room constantly trying to get better and make sure I'm ready for this season," Butcher told JCFootball.com.

As a prep at Delano (Mn.) High School, Butcher was a non-qualifier and he said after looking around at some different JUCO programs, he decided North Dakota State College of the Sciences was the place for him.

"This was the best opportunity for me," Butcher recalled. "I looked around and I liked coach (Jay) Smith a lot. I had some looks from some smaller schools, D-2 and D-3, and I just figured I'd come here, get myself qualified and then give myself an opportunity to play at the highest level I could."

As a freshman this past season, while playing the nose tackle spot in the Wildcats' scheme, Butcher contributed 15 tackles and two sacks and said he knows what he does best and what he needs to work on.

"I'm a better run-stopper right now," Butcher admitted. "I'm good at plugging up the gaps and getting penetration and I'm good at taking on the double-team.

"I want to get more explosive off the ball and be quicker so I can be better at rushing the quarterback, so I've been working on that alot along with my strength."

On the recruiting front, things have yet to take off, but Butcher said he isn't too worried about that right now.

"More than anything I want to help my team to a championship and to get wins," Butcher said. "I've I get in and show how hard I've worked then I hope a school likes me enough to offer, but I can't control that so it's not really up to me."

Butcher is on pace to graduate in December and he will have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
