Los Angeles (Calif.) Pierce College defensive lineman Marquel Combs has narrowed his list down to…
Top JUCO DT talks top schools
Combs has 47 offers in total to his name including the likes of his seven favorites as well as Maryland, Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, Boise State, BYU, Memphis, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Utah among others.
Here are his thoughts on each of his top seven...
Oregon State - "I think coach (Mark) Banker is just a great coach and I like how highly ranked they are. They are doing some great things there."
Kansas - "I like where their program is headed and I think they are doing some good things there. I could come in and play right away there."
Kansas State - "Coach (Mo) Latimore gets it done there and they are playing really well. It's a top program and I really like the success they have had with JC guys there."
Cal - "I feel real comfortable with the coaching staff there. Coach (Todd) Howard has had success with guys at every stop and he's gotten guys like Brian Price to the (NFL) so he's a great coach and their staff there is cool."
Washington State - "I love everything about their staff. Coach (Mike) Leach is legendary and I have a great comfort-level with the entire staff there. I know I could come in and play early if I chose to go there."
Iowa State - "Their program is definitely on the way up and I feel like I could go in and help them win the Big 12 during my time there."
Michigan State - "They play great football there and I really like what coach (Ted) Gill stands for and his approach to things. He's had so much success. You don't last for 35 years coaching unless you are good at what you do."
Combs also explained what he will be looking for when he makes his decision.
"The first thing is my comfort-level with the D-Line coach and the head coach," Combs said. "The second thing is definitely playing time. I don't expect the job just to be handed to me, but I only have two years to play, so I need to make sure I'm going to get a shot at playing and then it's up to me to take advantage of that.
"The last thing is 'do I feel like I can help them right away?' I want to help make a difference when I step on campus and that's something I'll be looking at along with the other stuff."
As a freshman last fall while playing the nose tackle position for the Brahmas, Combs was a handful for opposing offensive linemen, finishing with 34 tackles, a team-leading 10 tackles-for-loss and 2.5 sacks.
This season, while facing double-teams on nearly every play, Combs has posted 18 tackles, two sacks and 6.5 tackles-for-loss.
We will have more on Combs' recruitment in the coming weeks.
