Daoust Visits JUCO Safety

Iowa Western Safety Isaiah Johnson

The JUCO trail has been a point of emphasis for the Syracuse staff this week. On Wednesday, assistant coach Tim Daoust took a trip out to Iowa Western to visit safety Isaiah Johnson. Johnson discussed that and more with CuseNation.com.

A busy week for the Syracuse staff continued as defensive line coach Tim Daoust visited Iowa Western on Wednesday to watch practice and talk to safety Isaiah Johnson.

"Coach Tim Daoust is recruiting me," Johnson said. "He visited me and watched me practice. We talked about me coming to their school and battling for that starting position at safety right away.

"He said their losing a safety and I could come in right away and fill that spot."

Johnson thinks very highly of Syracuse and has interest in the Orange. Syracuse wants to add a defensive back to their 2013 class, and Johnson could be a target for them.

"I love that they're going to the ACC next year," he offered. "I have family in both the north and south of the east coast. And also that they play in a dome."

While the Orange haven't offered yet, that could change soon. An offer would have a big impact on the 6-foot-1 prospect.

"He (Tim Daoust) said he's going to take a look at my film this weekend," Johnson explained. "And he's going to let me know what they're going to do.

"It would be huge (if they offered). They would definitely be one of my favorites."

Syracuse is not the only school coming after the talented safety. Kansas, Wyoming, New Mexico and Northern Iowa have all offered. Schools like Texas Tech, UCLA, Arizona State, Arkansas State, and Appalachian State are all showing interest as well.

Johnson was supposed to take his official visit to Wyoming last weekend, but that has been rescheduled to January 18th. An official visit with Kansas has been scheduled for the weekend of December 7th. Kansas is another school Johnson really likes.

"I feel like Kansas is a great academic school," he described. "They have a great tradition behind them. Coach Buddy Wyatt is recruiting me from there."

New Mexico is the most recent offer for Johnson. They offered him today, and he is definitely interested in what they can offer.

"I like them," Johnson said. "They are going to be in the running."

Kansas, New Mexico and Wyoming are Johnson's three favorites right now, but Syracuse would move into that group should they offer. If an Orange offer comes, which could happen as soon as this weekend, Johnson would look to take an official visit there at some point.

Right now, he is going through the recruiting process and a decision does not seem imminent.

"I am looking for playing time," Johnson declared. "Also the atmosphere of the school and their ability to win.

"I want to decide by signing day in February since I'm a May graduate."
