They have certainly shown they are not afraid to look west for prospects, and one player who might be in the mix is 6'0 195lb. receiver Ryan Watson.
Having just finished his season for Golden West College, a Junior College in Huntington Beach, CA, Watson updated GoldenEaglePride.com on the latest with him.
"Our team had quarterback problems this season," he updated us. "Both of our QB's went down early, and I was thrust in there because we didn't have anyone else to run it.
"I had to learn to run zone reads and I also played running back and receiver this year. We lost a bunch of close games, and if we had a true QB I know we could have had a good season."
Watson told us the details on how the Decatur, AL product ended up out in California.
"Originally out of High School I had offers from Ole Miss, Auburn, and South Alabama," he said. "I didn't make the grades so they pulled their scholarships.
"I wasn't able to find any other JuCo's at that time who were close to home. That's when I found a friend who I played High School with who was out at Golden West College.
"I sent them my tape, and now I'm out here playing football. While I do like it, there is nothing like football in the deep south."
Watson updated the latest, including a recent offer from Southern Miss.
"Before the head coach got fired, I was offered a scholarship there," he said. "Since he got fired, I haven't heard anything this past week.
"I saw today that they hired the offensive coordinator from Oklahoma State, and that really excited me. That man is a genius with his offensive ability.
"Southern Miss is such a great program, and I'd love to get over there and introduce myself to him and hopefully end up playing there."
Watson said he's also hearing from schools across the country.
"I have a few offers out there right now, from UNC-Charlotte, Colorado State, and Utah State," he informed us.
Watson said he is going to try to take a visit to Southern Miss to meet the new staff.
He said he projects as either a wide receiver or safety at the next level. He is very explosive, and as a track star, may have just what the Golden Eagles need, a deep threat.
Watson was clocked at a 4.3 just yesterday.
We'll continue to track Watson and other Golden Eagle prospects as we continue pressing ahead in the early days of the Todd Monken era.
