After wavering on his Iowa pledge following the departure of his position coach, Damond Powell reaffirmed his commitment to the Hawkeyes after meeting with coaches on Saturday.

After addressing second thoughts about his Iowa commitment, Damond Powell decided on Saturday to stick with the Hawkeyes. The junior college receiver played host to coaches Kirk and Brian Ferentz at his home.

"I just feel relieved," Powell said. "I was kind of worried when (Iowa Receivers) Coach (Erik) Campbell left. But I got my questions answered (Saturday) and I'm OK. Now I just have to do what I have to do; work on my body and join the team in June."

Powell verbally committed to the Hawkeyes in early December after building a strong relationship with Campbell. The Snow (Utah) Junior College receiver recently was told by Brian Ferentz that Iowa Campbell was leaving the porogram.

The Ferentzs were able to ease Powell's mind on Saturday. It was the first time his family met the Iowa coaches as he officially visited the school by himself.

"I wanted to know what they had planned for me and I wanted them to talk to my parents," Powell said. "The plan is for me to get in there and make plays for the team next year. They think I'm a team player that can bring positive energy to the team. They said they see me as a deep threat."

Powell, who caught 41 passes for 1, 231 yards and 14 touchdowns this fall at Snow, was planning visits to Texas Tech and Minnesota this month. He said he will not make those trips after Saturday's meeting with Iowa.

"I saw how they bonded with my parents and they got to meet my family," Powell said. "I'm just going to stick with them."

Powell said on Thursday that Brian Ferentz told him that he was going to be the new receivers coach. He said he got the information wrong.

"That's not the case," Powell said. "I misunderstood. (Brian) said that he was my new recruiting coach. I thought he meant he was going to be my position coach."

While a connection to his position coach is important to Powell, he believes the Iowa will find the right person to tutor receivers.

"I'm very comfortable with Coach Ferentz and so is my family," Powell said. "I trust that he will hire a great (receivers) coach."
