UM DL target signed and ready at Ole Miss

Signing a Junior College defensive tackle prospect was definitely an option for the University of Miami this recruiting season but the most talented one, Lavon Hooks, signed with Ole Miss instead.

The Hurricanes were very thin at the defensive tackle position in 2012, and so it wasn't a surprise that they actively recruited several Junior College players at the position. The most heavily recruited one, Lavon Hooks, never ended up taking a visit to Miami.

"Miami offered me and I considered them but I just decided to visit some other schools instead," Hooks said.

At 6-foot-4 and 290 pounds, Hooks signed with Ole Miss a couple weeks ago and is set to enroll very soon. He talked about the season they just had.

"I think Ole Miss had a better season than what was expected," he said. "I also think they seem hungry and determined to keep getting better."

Hooks said he was sold on the chance of getting early playing time at Ole Miss as well.

"The coaching staff tells me that the opportunity is there to earn playing time right away," he said.

Hooks talked about the relationship he's developed with a few of the Ole Miss coaches.

"I talk to Coach Freeze and Coach Kiffin, I like them a lot; we talk all the time. They're really cool guys, I look forward to playing for them."

Hooks is expected to begin classes next week.
