Derricott is a LB to watch in 2013

Garden City LB D'vonta Derricott (6-2, 230) had an outstanding freshman campaign and has already hauled in two offers this offseason. JCFootball.com caught up with the talented linebacker recently and he updated us on where things stand and what he's been working on this offseason...

"I want to get better at shedding blockers and getting bigger and stronger will definitely help that," Derricott told JCFootball.com. "I've been running a lot and working on different techniques on shedding blockers, hand-fighting, stuff like that, and I've been lifting a lot too."

As a freshman last season, while playing inside for the Broncbusters, Derricott totaled 55 tackles, one forced fumble and one interception.

"What I do best is pursue side-to-side, so I'm best at stopping the run, but I can do both (play the run and the pass) pretty well," Derricott noted.

On the recruiting front, schools from all over have been recruiting the talented linebacker prospect and he's got two early offers already in the bank.

"Right now I have offers from East Carolina and Kansas," Derricott said. "ECU offered me out of high school and they told me they were still going to have that offer for me and Kansas offered me back in December.

"I'm getting a lot of interest from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State and South Florida wants me to come on an official visit for their spring game, so I'm working on setting that up."

Derricott graduated from Hermitage (Va.) High School back in 2012 and was getting attention from schools like Virginia Tech, Virginia, Boston College and several other schools, but was unable to qualify academically.

Derricott is working hard to finish up his classes so that he can graduate in December and he will have three years to play two following the 2013 football season.
