Oroville, Calif. - Host Butte College took advantage of six turnovers by Fullerton College to pull away from the Hornets in the second half for a 28-13 victory in the California Community College Athletic Association football championship game Saturday afternoon.

An overflow crowd, estimated at approximately 3,000, watched the battle of unbeaten 2-year college teams at Cowan Stadium.

Butte freshman quarterback Thomas Stuart, the game MVP, completed 13 of 23 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns. Offensive player of the game Richard Murphy, a 6-3, 240-poud sophomore tight end, caught five passes for 143 yards -- including a 70-yard score.

Fullerton had the defensive player of the game, sophomore linebacker Justin Owens (6-1, 215), who had 11 tackles.

It was the second state title for the Roadrunners (12-0), who also won in 2008. Fullerton, which finished 12-1, was the first official state champion, in 1967.

Fullerton suffered six turnovers, including four interceptions. Butte had none. But the Hornets remained in the game until Butte defensive back London Muse returned the final interception 51 yards for a TD with 38 seconds left in the game.

Hornets quarterback Jose Escobar connected with Keondrick Daniels on a 47-yard scoring play with 4:33 remaining to close the gap to 28-13. The margin remained eight points after the conversion kick sailed wide left. Turnovers killed Fullerton's final two opportunities.

The Roadrunners scored first when the 6-0, 195-pound Stuart hit Bo Brummel with a 6-yard toss on the first play of the second quarter. That was the only first half score.

Butte thwarted two Fullerton first period threats with interceptions - in the end zone and on the nine yard line -- then stopped the Hornets on fourth down at the two as hobbled Fullerton quarterback Jose Escobar fumbled on the play. Escobar, honored this week's as the state's top quarterback, was playing with a broken bone on his throwing hand. The 6-1, 200-pound sophomore completed 20 of 36 passes for 237 yards.

The Roadrunners hit paydirt again in the third quarter when Stuart connected with Murphy in the open on the run at the Hornets' 35 and he ran the rest of the way to complete a 69-yard TD. Butte converted for two points on a pass from Kendall Williams to Jon Parks for a 14-0 lead.

Fullerton responded with its first score, returning the kickoff just past midfield and then driving for a TD with fullback Nick Norman running for the final 4 yards with 1:18 left in the third quarter to make it 14-7 after the PAT kick.

Butte came right back with a 24-yard kickoff return by Quinta Thomas to set-up a 44-yard drive, capped by Stuart's 24-yard TD pass to Brummel.

Butte rushed for 229 yards, led by Robert Frazier, 20 carries for 86 yards, and Williams, 14 for 78.

Ryan Byrd led the Hornets on the ground with 13 carries for 62 yards. Fullerton wide receiver Ryan Longoria caught six passes for 77 yards and Daniels had four for 92.

TWO USA TEAMS FINISH 12-0: Butte, at 12-0, finished with the same record as East Mississippi Community College, which won the championship of the slightly smaller National Junior College Athletic Association last Sunday with a 52-32 victory over Georgia Military College in the Mississippi Bowl. The CCCAA has the USA's largest JC/CC football program, with 70 teams. Butte was ranked No. 1 and Fullerton No. 2 in the final regular season California state poll.

Butte defeated Fresno, 41-21, in the Northern California Football Association championship game.

Fullerton beat Riverside, 23-14, in the Southern California Football Association title contest.
