This season, Ruiz totaled over 20 tackles with 1.5 sacks and six tackles-for-loss while helping his team get to 6-4 on the season.
"I had a pretty good year, but we changed our scheme up to be a 3-4 so I was more of a guy that had to hold the edge and let the linebackers make their plays," Ruiz told JCFootball.com back in December. "I'm not really built for that scheme, but I wanted to help my team any way that I could, so I learned how to use my hands better and hold the point and I think in the long run it really will help me in how I play the game."
Ruiz chose South Dakota over offers from Northern Colorado and Idaho and was getting a lot of interest from Fresno State and Utah State.
He is visiting South Dakota this weekend and plans to sign his letter on February 5th.
Ruiz is on pace to finish up his AA degree in May and he will have two years to play two starting in the fall of 2014.
