Versatility Is The Key To Grossmont LB's Game

Grossmont LB Ilya Petrosyan (6-2, 235) had a solid freshman season and this fall, he'll be manning, at different points in the season, all three of the linebacker spots in the Griffins' defensive scheme...

"I'll play some inside and some outside, but it will mostly be outside linebacker," Petrosyan told JCFootball.com recently. "I'm more of a run stopper, a guy who gets into the backfield and gets tackles-for-loss and I really like getting after the quarterback.

"Those are the things I feel like I do best."

As a freshman this past fall, Petrosyan totaled 35 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 9.5 tackles-for-loss, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery and this year, with the loss of so many starters, he's taking on a bigger leadership role.

"I've always been the guy who just does his job and leads by example, but this year, I'm trying to be more vocal and get my team up and to keep them up," Petrosyan said. "My coaches have really stressed that I need to be that guy and that's what I've really been trying to do.

"The other thing I've been working on his my coverage when I drop back. I want to be better at it. I'm pretty good in coverage, but I can always be better."

As a prep at North Hollywood (Ca.) High School, Petrosyan flashed both the potential to be a solid collegiate player as well as his academic skills, but he didn't get the offers he was looking for, so he decided to head to El Cajon to play for the Griffs.

"My sister lived down here in San Diego and I wanted to get down to be closer to her, so I moved down to be with her and it just turned out that Grossmont was the right place for me," Petrosyan noted. "I liked the coaches and they have a good program here, so it was a good fit for me."

Recruiting has yet to pick up for Petrosyan, but a good start to his sophomore season should garner him more attention with four-year programs.

Petrosyan plans to sign with a school in December and he will have three years to play two following the 2014 football season.
