West Los Angeles recruiting roundup
LB Willie Williams
Posted Jan 5, 2007
West Los Angeles was the destination this past year of one of the best college football players in the nation, but they also have several players that will be signing letters of intent in February. Head coach Craig Austin spoke with JCFootball.com and he gave us his thoughts on some of his standouts from the 2006 season.
Here's a run-down of some players who are getting some looks from D-1 and D-1AA programs...
“Willie is a phenomenal football player. It’s too bad that the junior college football world didn’t get to see very much of him this year. He only played in four games for us, but in that time you could really see how athletic and impressive he really is. He’s definitely going to be a first or second-round selection to play in the NFL, that’s how good he is. He’s an edge guy. He’s a guy that will fly around and make plays, but he’s at his best when he’s rushing the passer and coming off the edge. He played some defensive end, outside linebacker and middle linebacker for us. In the four games he played I counted at least nine sacks. There may have been more.”
As far as recruiting is concerned, Austin held off on naming what offers Williams has received because of the special circumstances with his recruitment.
“Because of his past and his history, the schools that are recruiting him have to get clearance from a number of areas before he can commit,” Austin said. “He’s a really good kid and he’s turned himself around. We’ll be announcing where he’s headed later this month. A local T.V. station here is going to cover it and there will be a press conference to let everyone know.”
Williams was rated the number one linebacker in the country for the 2005 recruiting class and played as a true freshman at the University of
, but then left over differences with playing time with the coaching staff.
“Jerrell Woods is going to go to a Pac 10 school.
are all recruiting him pretty hard now and he’s heading up to Arizona State this weekend on an official visit. He doesn’t have any offers yet, but if he visits then those schools will probably give him an offer while he’s there.
“He runs a legit 4.4 and he’s 5-11, 210 pounds. He runs really tough and he’s just a special, special runner. He’s the entire package. He can run inside or outside; he can catch the ball out of the backfield; and he can block really well too.”
“He signed with
and he’s going to be a really good coverage corner for them. He’s going to a great conference where they’ll play against
. I expect him to be a starter the minute he steps on the field down there. He’s got exceptional coverage skills and he’s a man-to-man guy. He’s a player they can put on the opposing team’s best wideout and he’ll shut him down. He’s a really, really good player.”
WR Eddie Newton –
“He’s an outstanding wide receiver. He was named player of the week three times and he averaged 111 yards per game. That’s pretty amazing. He’s 6-2, 205 and he’s got good speed to go with that size. He runs a 4.5, but he’s even got better football speed. He always seems to be running away from people when he gets the ball in his hands. He’s also got a great attitude.
“Humbolt State has offered him, but I think that some Pac 10 and other conference schools will come in on him soon. We’ll be getting stuff out to them soon.”
Four other players that Austin said that are receiving interest from some smaller schools are LB Justin Calcote (Humbolt State), CB Kamron Brown (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Sacramento State), DT Ron Boone (Charleston Southern) and CB
