One of the top returning linebackers in the JC ranks this fall is Orange Coast's Shaun Mohler (6-3, 220) and he's hearing from a number of top programs. JCFootball.com spoke to him recently and he talked about his offseason and he's made some plans for the next few weeks.

"I'm heading up to Cal for their junior day this weekend," Mohler told JCFootball.com. "I haven't spoken to them yet, but they sent me a letter and said they wanted me to come up so I'm going to go because they are such a good program and they always have good linebackers."

Mohler is also expected to attend the JCFootball.com combine that is being held at Citrus College.

As a senior at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, Mohler knew he wasn't going to qualify so he started to look around at a couple of two-year programs and decided on Orange Coast.

"I was pretty much going to Saddleback, but I felt like Orange Coast is better at getting guys moved on to four year schools," Mohler said. "They also run a really fun defense here and it is pretty close to my home so that helped too."

His freshman campaign was outstanding as Mohler posted 108 tackles and was named a 3rd Team All-American as well as 1st Team All-Region and 1st Team All-Conference as a weakside linebacker.

"He could play either outside position, but weakside is where we use him and he’s great," Orange Coast head coach Mike Taylor said. "He’s really strong too – he bench presses 225 20 times."

Mohler also runs well posting a 4.6 forty in recent workouts.

"I've been working out pretty hard this winter," Mohler said. "It's what drives me -- I want to be better every year.

"I play pretty quick because I can diagnose plays pretty quickly and then get to the spot I need to be. I just want to get better at doing that and reading the line sets and stuff like that. The better I can do that, the better I can be at playing the game.

"Another thing I'm working on is my size. I played at 200 pounds last year and I'm 220 now. That should make things easier for me in shedding guys and taking on blockers."

Besides the recent interest from Cal, Mohler's mailbox has been inundated with letters from schools across the country.

"I get stuff all the time from Oregon State, Oregon, Kansas State, Kansas, Iowa State, Wyoming, Arizona State, UTEP, Colorado and Nevada," Mohler said. "I don't have any offers yet, but my coach said not very many guys have offers yet so I just need to be patient.

"He thinks I'll get some after spring ball and after teams can come and watch us."

Mohler said he plans to major in Business wherever he ends up and he'll graduate in December with three years to play two.
