Walters is a lock-down corner
As a senior at William P. Dwyer High School in West Palm Beach, Florida Walters was heavily recruited, but a lackluster test score kept him from being offered.
"I graduated in 2005 and sat out a year and just worked out and tried to re-focus myself," Walters said. "I ended up out at Allan Hancock last year and had fun there, but I just didn't feel like they were using me in the best way, so my homeboy Thomas Locust, who was already playing at Cerritos called me and said I should come over and play for them so that's why I'm here.
"They have a good history of putting guys out into four-year programs and that's another reason why."
As a freshman in 2006, Walters posted 45 tackles, 12 passes broken up and one interception. He also returned kicks and punts as well.
"I think I'm pretty versatile and I want to help my team anyway that I can," Walters said. "I can return punts, kicks, play coverage – whatever it takes to win, that's what I'll do."
On the recruiting front, Walters hasn't heard specifically from any programs, but apparently his coaches have.
"They told me a lot of schools have been asking them about me and all the schools that showed up this spring to watch us liked me a lot," Walters said. "The main ones that are sending stuff now have been Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Kansas State and Utah, but there were a lot more that they mentioned too."
At the combine at Citrus College in May, Walters had one of the best days of the 400-plus prospects in attendance.
He posted a 4.4 forty time, a 39-inch vertical and he claims a 290 pound max on the bench press. Walters also flourished in the one-on-ones facing off against El Camino WR Corey Surrency as well as several other top wideouts and holding his own.
Walters expects to graduate in December and will have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
