Smith chooses New Mexico State
"They wanted a big-time back to come in and be the workhorse for them and I feel that I can do that for them."
Smith rushed for over 900 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2007 and hauled in 12 passes out of the backfield for 90 yards as well.
"I'm a complete back," Smith said. "I can run inside or outside. I can catch the ball, but our team only used me on swing passes and stuff like that.
"I can pick up the blitz and pretty much do whatever you need me to do."
Smith has outstanding speed (4.36) combined with impressive strength (325 pound bench) and athleticism (38-inch vertical) and he said he really worked on making quick decisions and getting stronger this past summer.
"I feel I really improved myself all the way around," Smith said. "I worked hard last summer and it paid off this year because I felt stronger as the season went along.
Smith chose New Mexico State over interest from North Carolina, Kansas State, Northern Arizona and Florida State.
Smith will graduate in December and will have three years to play two when he steps on campus.
