It's been quite a while since we've been able to catch up with Santa Ana DE B.J. Bell (6-3, 252) and…
Bell causes problems for offenses
Bell had an outstanding freshman campaign for the Dons, posting nine sacks, 42 tackles and 13.5 tackles-for-loss while also being named the team's Defensive Player of the Year.
"I had a good season, but this year should be even better," Bell said. "I want to get my speed down to a 4.5. I mean, I already run a 4.65, but I'm already working really hard on my speed and my agility and I really think it's going to drop my time down so that will help me in getting to the quarterback even more."
Bell prepped at Tustin High School in California and got some looks as a senior there, but because he was a non-qualifier, he didn't get any scholarship offers.
"I liked the way this program was run," Bell said. "I liked the coaches and the players and their workouts were intense and they really got after it. It was just the best place for me.
"They've helped me stay focused on the two things I need to move to the next level -- school and football. That has really helped me a lot and my grades are good and I'm improving as a player as well."
So far, Bell has already received more recruiting attention than he did in high school after his standout 2007 campaign.
"I've talked to the Oregon coaches on the phone a couple of times and they seem real cool and interested in me," Bell said. "Utah State, Oregon State and Middle Tennessee are the other schools looking at me right now.
"My coaches said it's really early so just be patient, work hard and teams will take note of what I do."
Bell is on pace to graduate in May of 2009 and he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
We'll continue to track his progress in the coming weeks and months and update things as they change.
