Porter is ready to shine for San Mateo

San Mateo RB Daniel Porter update

San Mateo always seems to be loaded with talent every season and one of their top returning playmakers from 2007 is RB Daniel Porter (6-0, 198). Porter's abilities as both a runner and receiver have caught the attention of three four-year programs and he updated JCFootball.com on recruiting as well what he's been focusing on this offseason.

"I've been in the weight room almost every day and I've really been focusing on getting bigger," Porter said. "I also want to be a better blocker and that's all about working hard.

"My coaches also said they want me to be ready to be a receiver this year so I'm working on keeping my hands strong, but still soft and I want to be more crisp on my routes and reads."

Porter put up over 700 yards and six touchdowns on the ground this past fall and said his style can't be pigeon-holed into one thing.

"I can do it all," Porter said. "My vision is good so I can run and make guys miss, but I can also lower my shoulder and make a hole when I need to and then I have the speed (4.38) to break away and be a home-run guy."

On the recruiting front, Porter has already begun to hear from three schools who have already talked about bringing him in after the season.

"Oregon State, Washington State and San Diego State are the three main ones right now," Porter said. "All three of them said they like my playmaking abilities and how physical I am.

"I don't have any offers yet and I'm open to everyone. I'm just going to take it slow and go from there. My favorite school growing up was California and they would be my dream school, but I'm not going to limit myself right now. I'm just looking forward to spring ball and seeing who is the most interested and then having the best season possible so I can finish it off here at CSM strong."

Porter will graduate in December and when he leaves he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
