Big season on tap for Simmons
"It's funny because they were actually looking at one of my teammates and they saw me and said they wanted me," Simmons said. "I'm glad I came out here because I can just focus on school and football. I've gotten my grades where they need to be and I've gotten myself in a position to be successful at football too."
Simmons was hard at work this offseason, focusing on his routes as well as increasing his upper-body strength while working out with South Carolina WR Kenny McKinley.
"We were friends from high school, so we work out together," Simmons said. "He showed me what I needed to do to be successful and we worked on our routes and just being precise.
"I have good speed (4.4) and I improved my upper-body strength. My bench is up to 305 and I really wanted to improve because if you aren't getting better, everyone else passes you by."
As a freshman for Independence, Simmons posted solid numbers, hauling in 68 receptions for 890 yards and seven touchdowns and was named an All-American for his efforts.
So far this year, he's off to a solid start, managing to snag 13 receptions for 165 yards and one touchdown in three games.
"It's been tough at times, because teams are doubling me up all game long," Simmons said. "It's just been something I have to work at and keep playing the game because eventually I'm going to get my chances to make plays."
On the recruiting front, Simmons already has four offers and he's getting a lot of attention from some other schools as well.
"Kansas, Kansas State, Arkansas and South Florida have all offered me," Simmons said. "Georgia, Arizona and Missouri have been in contact with me a lot, but they haven't offered yet.
"I'm planning to take all my visits. I have a bye week coming up (September 20th), so I'd like to set something up with one of the schools that have offered me, but right now I'm not sure.
"I'm open to everyone and I'll take my time and make the right decision for me."
Simmons will graduate in May and he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
