Jones DE makes his way

Jones County always has plenty of D-1 talent on hand and this year is no different. One player to keep an eye on this summer and fall is DE Tyrunn Walker (6-5, 265) a talented defensive lineman who is poised for a breakout season. JCFootball.com spoke with the gifted defender recently and he updated us on things including how he ended up at Jones...

Walker prepped at Westgate High School in New Iberia, Louisiana and enjoyed a standout career there for the Tigers, but he was unable to qualify academically for a D-1 scholarship so he began looking around and Jones was the best fit.

"I had schools recruiting me, but we figured out that I wasn't going to qualify so me and my coach began looking at junior colleges," Walker told JCFootball.com. "I talked to the coaches aat Jones and they said they were coming to watch me in the Texas vs. Louisiana game and they saw me and liked me so they offered me a scholarship and I took it.

"Coming here to Jones was the best decision I could make as a person and a player. I needed to focus on the right things and coming here helped me do that."

As a freshman, Walker contributed 16 tackles as a reserve on a team that went 7-2 and finished the year ranked No. 14 in the NJCAA.

"I think I'm a balanced defensive end, because I can play the run or rush the quarterback well, but because of my long arms I think I'm a better pass-rusher," Walker said. "I'm quick off the ball and I will show it all this season."

On the recruiting front Walker is already hearing from plenty of D-1 schools.

"Mississippi State, Louisville and Memphis have been on me for a while," Walker said. "Tulsa just started talking to me and Houston has been in contact with me a lot lately.

"I don't have any offers yet, but mainly I'm looking for a school with tradition and honestly it will be the program as a whole -- how many guys graduate and go on will be a big thing too."

Walker is on pace to graduate this December and he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
