Six offers and counting for Derek Earls
"I can read plays really quickly, so that allows me to use my speed and quickness to make plays," Earls told JCFootball.com. "I can bump out and get into my zone drop quickly and rush the quarterback, but I can also rush the quarterback and I can be physical. It allows me to do anything a coaching staff needs me to do."
Last season, Earls earned some All-American consideration by totaling 96 tackles, 1.5 sacks and three interceptions while he's already got 14 tackles and five tackles for loss in two games so far this season.
Recruiting got off to a quick start for Earls and he said recently he's up to six offers and he's already scheduled visits to two of those schools.
"I've got offers from Iowa State, Colorado, Arizona, Illinois, Kansas and Oklahoma State," Earls noted. "I visited Iowa State during the spring and that was pretty cool up there. They have a lot of nice facilities and a new staff, so that was interesting to get to see them and what they are about.
"I've already scheduled two official visits to two of the other schools. I'll visit Arizona when they take on UCLA (Oct. 24th) and I'll visit Oklahoma State when they play Texas Tech (Nov. 14th).
"With my schedule, I'm not sure if I will get to any other schools. We're playing almost every week, so it will be tough. I'm open to scheduling some more visits, but right now these are the two I'm going to focus on."
Earls said it's safe to say the Wilcats and Cowboys are at the top of his list of schools, but he isn't ready to name an official leader at this point.
He's on pace to finish up his AA degree in December and he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
