The 6' 3", 205 pound Little Rock (Ark) native inked with Oklahoma State and enrolled at MS Gulf Coast CC after failing to qualify. Where does Brett Moncrief now stand?
"As of right now, I am committed to Troy, but I am about to set something up with Ole Miss and Missouri. I committed early, but that might change."
Moncrief enrolled at MS Gulf Coast CC inm the fall of '07 after being placed there by Oklahoma State.
"They wanted me to come down here after I did not qualify so that is why I am here."
And where is Oklahoma State in the recruiting picture?
"We kind of split ways last year. They scouted one of my games and said I was not aggressive enough. I had two cracked ribs the game they were watching. We still talk but not on that level. We have pretty much stopped communication. I have not talked to them since this summer."
Brett holds no grudges.
"Not at all. It just motivated me. I do not think they have seen any film on me this year, but it made me work harder and better in the offseason after they told me that. I did not get mad at all. It just made me work harder."
This season has been an up and down one for the former North Little Rock standout.
"Last year I played the X, outside WR. This year they moved me to slot, and we do not get a lot of opportunities to make plays, but I have adjusted. I have made the most out of my opportunities, but I do miss playing outside receiver. I have 19 receptions for 217 yards in 7 games. I missed three games because of a hamstring issue."
MS Gulf Coast CC plays East MS CC this weekend for the State Championship, but Moncrief is hoping to graduate in December and knows that signing day is just around the corner.
"Coach Dickerson (Ole Miss) is supposed to be calling me this week to set up an official visit. I will probably visit right after their regular season is over (November 28th). Missouri is doing the same. They are supposed to be coming over to the school soon. I talked to their OL coach, Coach Henson. He said he is going to set it up when they come by the school. Coach Dickerson said he was going to be calling me on Friday to get my visit set up over there. Coach Dickerson is supposed to call Coach Campbell (head coach at MS Gulf Coast CC) and see when it is a good time for him because of the playoffs going on and everything."
Brett's father, Sidney Moncrief, played basketball with the Ole Miss head coach at the University of Arkansas.
"He played hoops at Arkansas with Coach Nutt so that have that connection. My dad and Coach Nutt know each other pretty well."
What else has Moncrief interested in Ole Miss?
"I like it that they are winning. I love to win and hate to lose. They have a great program because of Coach Nutt. He is doing the same things down there that he did at Arkansas. Also, a few of my teammates (
Wayne Dorsey
,
Damien Jackson
,
James Carmon
) took a visit up there a few weeks back. They said they loved it. I just can not wait to get up there and experience what they experienced. Wayne (Dorsey) told me that I am going to love it up there. I just look forward to my visit. That is why I like Ole Miss."
Missouri is getting very close to offering.
"I know Missouri is close. If anybody, Missouri is the closest. Coach Henson loved my film from the East MS CC game. He said they were about to show it to their head coach. I think they are going to offer me. I do not know about Ole Miss. They seem very interested, but I guess I will just have to wait and see."
What else stands out about Missouri?
"That offense (laugh). They throw the ball a lot, like 40-50 times a game. Coach Henson said his top 4 WR's all had 60 plus catches, so you get a lot of opportunities to make plays. That is what I like about Missouri. I have never experienced playing in an offense like that. I have always played in a run oriented offense."
What does Brett like about Troy?
"They are a winning program, and they run the same offense we do, but they pass the ball out of the spread, and we run it. We run the same routes. I committed to them early because they ran the same type of offense we do, but they pass it a lot. You get a lot of opportunities to make plays in Troy's offense."
