Arizona gets a good one in Usman

Navarro was at the top of the JUCO rankings for much of the season, but fell short of their goal to reach the NJCAA Championship game. One of the players directly responsible for their lofty status was LB/DE Mohammed Usman (6-1, 235) and this past weekend he made a commitment to Arizona and he spoke with JCFootball.com about the reason he decided to become a Wildcat...

Usman was a highly decorated recruit out of Bowie High School in Arlington, Tx. and signed with Houston over offers from programs across the country.

"It was a great opportunity for me, but I didn't get it done with my academics so I had to leave," Usman told JCFootball.com recently. "Navarro is the school that showed me the most interest and it was still pretty close to home so it was a good fit."

This past season for the Bulldogs resulted in a number one ranking and ended with a 10-1 record when they lost to Blinn. Usman was directly responsible for their outstanding play on defense, posting 55 tackles, 4.5 sacks and forcing one fumble.

"Having a guy like Brandon Joiner on the other side really helps you a lot because teams can't concentrate on you," Usman said. "He's such a great pass-rusher, that it really takes attention away from you and you can just go do your thing."

Arizona offered Usman early in the process and Usman visited Tuscon this past weekend and liked what he saw.

"I went there and loved it," Usman said. "They are a great program and I felt like it would be a great fit for me to go there. I committed to them while I was there and I'm really excited to get school done here so I can get there and play D-1 ball again."

Usman chose the Wildcats over offers from Houston, TCU and Arkansas and had heavy interest from other Big 12 and Conference USA schools.

The talented defender is a 4-2-4 player, thus he must finish his AA degree before he can enroll. Because of that, he will not be able to sign with Arizona until February and will enroll in June with three years to play two once he steps on campus.
