Santa Ana's Ruurd Amelita waits his turn

He had a few schools eyeing him, but so far Santa Ana OL Ruurd Amelita (6-2, 340) is still waiting for a D-1 opportunity. JCFootball.com spoke with the athletic and physically imposing lineman recently and he updated us on things...

"I had Georgia State offer me, but they wanted me to commit to them sight-unseen," Amelita told JCFootball.com recently. "I was talking to the coach recruiting me and told him I couldn't commit to them unless I went out and visited and he was a little upset I wouldn't commit without visiting, but I mean, that's all the way across the country, so I couldn't just commit.

"Sacramento State has asked for my film and my transcripts, but right now that's about it."

Amelita played in two JUCO All-Star games following his sophomore season and said he's now going to wait to see what happens after schools complete their spring football practices.

"I know a lot of schools will recruit kids once they get through spring ball and see where their weaknesses are," Amelita said. "I'm just lifting, running and working hard and taking classes so that I can be ready to go in May when I get my AA degree."

"This is just a natural football player in a 345 pound frame," Santa Ana head coach Geoff Jones said recently. "We give a 'big hit of the game' (award) and I think he won 7 out of the 10 weeks (in 2008).

"He shows up to play every game and he will be a huge impact guy at the next level."

Wherever Amelita ends up he'll have three years to play two once he enrolls.
