As he and his teammates prepare for the start of their season this weekend, L.A. Pierce CB Clifford…
Pierce CB gets SEC offer
"Coach (Jeff) Popovich from FIU directed me out here," Johnson told JCFootball.com. "They were really the only ones recruiting me toward the end because I wasn't going to qualify and coach Popovich said I should come out here and try and get things in order to get qualified.
"It was a little different heading out here, but I got used to it and I really like the staff here at Pierce and how they get you ready for the next level."
As a freshman last fall, Johnson was solid for the Brahmas, posting 16 tackles, one interception and two passes defensed in eight games.
"We play different (coverage schemes) depending on who we are facing," Johnson said. "If we're facing some really good receivers, we'll go zone and cover them that way, but we also play a lot of man, bump-and-run, so I feel like I can play either type of coverage and do well."
Because of his size, athleticism and speed, Johnson has been getting a lot of attention over the past few months and received his first official offer from one of his suitors.
"Kentucky offered me about 10 days ago," Johnson said happily. "They called me coaches and said they liked me so much that they wanted to offer me.
"It definitely felt good and that will make me work a lot harder just to keep getting better and improving."
Also in the mix are Colorado, Hawaii, Arizona, Arizona State, Nebraska, Oklahoma and USC among others.
"I visited Oregon State on April 23rd and I really had a great time up there," Johnson said. "The coaches there told me they wanted me on their team and liked me a lot, but that they are still evaluating guys, so they haven't offered me yet.
"They are number two on my board right now, but if they offered they would be right up there."
Johnson said he's working hard to be able to sign with a school in December, but noted that if he doesn't he will be ready to go in May of 2011. Wherever he signs he will have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
