Rutherford is a versatile playmaker for Blinn

He's not the biggest player on the field, but all Blinn WR Shaun Rutherford (5-11, 193) does is make plays once he gets his hands on the ball. He's such a threat with the ball in his hands, he'll play a multitude of positions as well as contributing on special teams as the long-snapper. JCFootball.com was able to get in touch with the talented playmaker recently and he updated us on things...

"I play wherever I can help my team the most," Rutherford admitted to JCFootball.com recently. "I play some Wildcat quarterback, I play wide receiver, I return kicks and punts and I even long-snap."

As a freshman last fall, Rutherford subbed for Cameron Newton when the Buc coaches wanted to give their signal-caller a rest and he was solid rushing for over 100 yards and two scores while completing 20 of his 30 pass attempts for 420 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.

"As a senior in high school I threw for over 3,300 yards, so it wasn't any different playing for us at quarterback," Rutherford said. "They just liked me outside because of my quickness and athleticism, so I played wideout most of the time."

As a receiver, Rutherford hauled in 18 receptions for 214 yards and three touchdowns and this year he'll add punt and kick return duties to what he can do.

"What I do best is make plays with the ball in my hands," Rutherford said. "If I can get into space, I feel like I can take it all the way every time I touch it."

As far as recruiting is concerned, Rutherford is still wait on his first offer, but he said schools have been contacting him since the start of spring.

"Before I finished up school in spring, I was talking a lot with Kansas State, North Texas and Memphis," Rutherford said. "I just started talking to Kentucky really recently, so they are another one I'm talking to a little."

Rutherford was a full-qualifier after he finished up at Bay City (Tx.) High School. He said he's open to leaving this summer should a four-year school decide to offer him, but the plan currently is to play at Blinn this fall and sign with a school in December where he'll have three years to play two once he arrives.
