Three schools are close to offering Matthews
"One of my coaches knew some of the coaches out here," Matthews told JCFootball.com back in April. "It's a lot different out here because it's so much dryer, but I've gotten used to it and I'm enjoying my time here."
Last fall as a freshman DB for the Rams, Matthews posted solid number, racking up over 40 tackles and posting one interception, two forced fumbles and three blocked field goals to go along with 10 passes defensed.
Recruiting has gotten off to a tepid start for the talented DB, but after he finishes an English class this summer, he's hopeful to get some positive news on that front.
"Basically, Kentucky, UCLA and Auburn have all said they want to see my transcripts before they offer me," Matthews said. "It's an English class and I'm working hard in it, so once I get a good grade out of it, that will probably have a positive effect on whether I get offers from there or not."
While he's been hitting the books hard, Matthews has also been hard at work improving his overall game this summer as well.
"I'm in the weight room four or five days a week and I'm also out on the field working on my DB technique," Matthews said. "I'm doing speed drills, footwork drills, all the stuff that will help me be better on the field this fall."
Matthews said there has been some discussion of him possibly moving to free safety, but he prefers to stay at corner if at all possible and he might get a chance at using his 4.4 speed on offense in certain situations.
"They've talked about using me at wide receiver some of the time, so that's something exciting to me," Matthews acknowledged. "However I can get on the field and help my team, that's what I want to do."
Matthews is taking a full-load of classes this summer in order to graduate in December. Wherever he ends up he'll have three years to play two following the 2010 season.
